Allusion

Donne’s Song is totally different from the idealizing women during Renaissance. He satirizes women by using hyperbole, or gross exaggeration. According to the mythological mermaid singing that lures sailors to crash their ships, the speaker asks to complete several impossible and absurd tasks. In “Song”, Donne uses hyperbole to illustrate how difficult it is to find a beautiful, faith woman. This allusion signifies in “Song” because it emphasizes the main point throughout the poem. Although a woman seems to be honest and fair, Donne believes that she will still be false. The exaggeration in the poem shows that Donne is completely lost to find an honest woman.
